From Perch Lake to Rask Bay, many efforts are underway to restore the health of the St. Louis River. An event at Chambers Grove on October 6 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. invites community members to learn about the many restoration projects near the neighborhoods of Fond du Lac, Oliver, Gary New Duluth and share observations and experiences on the river.

Join resource managers and educators to discuss these projects and learn more. A kid’s activity table and snacks will be provided. Short informal presentations are from 5:30-6:00 p.m. at the park pavilion. For comfortable seating, consider bringing a folding chair.

Restoration work featured includes efforts at Perch Lake, Mud Lake, invasive species removal and tree planting in black ash forested wetlands along the estuary, sturgeon restoration, manoomin (wild rice) restoration and a new survey to uncover the ways that the St. Louis River supports community well-being.

The event is coordinated by the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve as they launch a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funded partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to removed harmful plants like buckthorn beginning in October this year and plant up to 80,000 trees along bays on islands of the St. Louis River in Spring 2023. The event is held with partners leading other major efforts in the area, including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Land Trust, City of Duluth and University of Minnesota Duluth with support from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
