DESCRIPTION:LAKE SUPERIOR ICE FESTIVAL 2023 ON BARKER’S ISLAND\nThe Lake Superior Ice Festival is a family-friendly fun event coordinated by the community to attract people of all ages and abilities to share in Superior’s passion for all things winter and come together to celebrate the coolest aspects of our City. The Reserve is honored to be a part of this event and to connect further with our community. \n  \nThe Estuarium is Open!\n \nAs part of the Ice Festival\, the Lake Superior Estuarium is open on Friday\, January 27th from 5pm to 8pm and Saturday\, January 28th from 10am to 5pm. The Lake Superior Estuarium is a gateway to the headwaters of the Great Lakes. Beautiful interactive displays tell stories of the St. Louis River Estuary\, Lake Superior\, and the communities on their shores. \nThe exhibit hall includes a play area for young children\, maps to orient you to the largest estuary on Lake Superior\, and information to help you get out and explore. This native grain has declined substantially in its historic range on the St. Louis River and beyond. Due to the importance of manoomin to tribal health\, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the state of Minnesota developed a health impact assessment to convey the importance of wild rice to Ojibwe people. Refreshments will be provided. \nLast summer\, Sherren led a project that used light to try and trap bloody red shrimp\, a potentially new invasive species in the Duluth-Superior Harbor. Through this project\, which was conducted at night\, she gained insight into what independent research entails and how to solve problems. The project also shed light on a mysterious side of the harbor that many do not see – what the river is like when people are asleep. Did she find the invasive shrimp? What characteristics of healthy soils can we promote? What soil qualities and contaminants should we avoid or mitigate? What are legacy contaminants and how do they exist in the soil? Come participate in discussions about this important part of the estuary ecosystem. \nThe Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Minnesota and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs offer this series of informal evening talks about the St. Louis River Estuary.
