Elizabeth Minor\, a professor with the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Large Lakes Observatory\, will present: “Lake Superior Storm Stories: A Biogeochemist’s View of the Plumes.” \nStorms can turn the Duluth-Superior Harbor and Lake Superior brown like chocolate milk as water\, sediment and nutrients run off from the land. The screening will take place at 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday\, March 9\, at the Lake Superior Estuarium on Barker’s Island in Superior (3 Marina Drive). \nThe film takes viewers below the surface of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem\, and into the middle of a complex web of interactions and changes. For over a century\, non-native plants\, fish and invertebrates have been silently invading the Great Lakes and are transforming the ecosystem from top to bottom\, threatening ecological diversity and local economies. \nMaking Waves chronicles the path of this invasion to the present day. The filmmakers join researchers on the front lines as they work to understand invasive species and to restore native species in an effort to prevent a biological takeover of the Great Lakes. \nThe screening is sponsored by the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][/cs_content]

The loss of ash will have important economic\, social\, and ecological impacts\, especially in areas where ash is the dominant canopy species\, such as wetlands and riparian areas. This workshop is offered to help prepare for and mitigate the anticipated challenges. \nJoin managers\, land owners\, and researchers for presentations\, field tours\, and posters aimed at the expected changes from the loss of ash and management options for resilient ecosystems. Topics will include silvicultural approaches\, options for species transition\, hydrologic changes\, plant community response\, biogeochemistry\, and more! \nThis workshop is being organizing and sponsoring by Michigan Technological University\, USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station\, and University of Minnesota.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” separator_top_type=”none” separator_top_height=”50px” separator_top_angle_point=”50″ separator_bottom_type=”none” separator_bottom_height=”50px” separator_bottom_angle_point=”50″ style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_custom_headline level=”h4″ looks_like=”h6″ accent=”false” class=”mtn mbn”]Event Registration & Information[/x_custom_headline][cs_text class=”link-list”] \n\nAshWorkshop.org\n\n[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][/cs_content]
