Plain Language Workshop

Tuesday February 3, 2026 | 9:00am-12:00pm
Lake Superior Reserve Confluence Room

3 Marina Drive, Superior, WI 54880

Taught by Wisconsin Literacy, hosted by the Lake Superior Reserve

Ever wonder why your message didn’t quite land? Discover the power of plain language, and make every word count!

Plain language means communicating so the audience understands your message the first time they read or hear it. It uses everyday words, active voice, and a logical structure to present information clearly and effectively. When you write in plain language, people can quickly understand and use the information—leading to better comprehension, fewer mistakes, and greater trust.

Research shows plain language strategies reduce time spent following up by being clear the first time, save time and money by getting your message across faster, and motivate readers to act quickly and accurately.

In this interactive 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to engage your audience and increase follow-through with proven plain language techniques.

  • In this course taught by trainers from Wisconsin Literacy, we’ll cover strategies for word choice, sentence structure, grammar, tone, content organization, and formatting—all designed to make your communication clear and effective.
  • We’ll review writing samples and use these strategies to improve readability.

Through a blend of presentation and practical exercises, you will gain plain language techniques you can use immediately.

This workshop is designed with natural resource professionals in mind, but we welcome participants from all fields. If you write emails, reports, outreach materials, or technical documents—and want your message to be clear and effective—you’ll find this session valuable.

Participation is limited to 25 attendees, and registration is required. Registration closes January 27, or when we reach maximum capacity. This training is developed by Wisconsin Literacy and offered by the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve Coastal Training Program.

Cost: There is a $25 charge for this training, charged to credit card at the time of registration.
